Drone Academy
- MassRobotics Drone Academy collaboration began in 2019 with our first pilot program run at the Dearborn STEM academy. See details in this blog post. As the curriculum became more refined, we ran our second academy in 2020 – details here. In 2022 we hosted students and faculty from Hampton University along with Brown University for our third academy to build and test curriculum and the drone hardware that has been developed into a user kit. This new user kit was used for the 2023 fourth Drone Academy where we hosted students and faculty from Howard University as well as a group of high school students.

Build
Students learn about the electronic components of the drone, flight mechanics and electrical assembly skills before soldering together their very own drone.
Program
In the world of robotics, learning to navigate a computer through a terminal is a crucial skill. Before the drones take flight students must interface with the onboard computer to calibrate their drone – all through a Linux terminal.
Fly
The most rewarding part of the entire program is watching these drones go from a box of parts to a fully functioning drone. The last day is spent with drones in the air.

How do I sign up?
Applications are currently closed for our 2024 academy – Please check back in February 2025.
What is required to apply?
Applicants must be rising Sophomores, Juniors or Seniors. Applicants must list a teacher reference with contact information.
What experience is needed prior to the academy?
It’s great if you have some technology experience, but it is not required.
When will I hear if I am selected?
Applicants will be informed of acceptance by June 1, 2024. Accepted students must commit to be on-site at MassRobotics daily through the week of July 8-12.
