Robotics Ecosystem Map
Massachusetts is home to a dynamic and thriving robotics industry.
The region’s leading robotic companies, academic research laboratories, policymakers and government organizations work closely together. This spurs the technology industry’s economic development through education, knowledge-sharing and relationship-building.
This ecosystem includes:
- More than 400 innovative companies producing and utilizing robotics applications serving 11 different markets (see map below)
- A critical mass of world-class universities including more than 35 robotics R&D programs across 18 institutions
- Highly skilled and experienced workforce and supporting related industries
- MassRobotics – the innovation hub for robotics and connected devices startups, hosted in Boston’s Innovation District
- New England Robotics Validation and Experimentation (NERVE) Center – based at UMass Lowell, a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) test facility providing an indoor environment for testing ground-based robotics and a validation site for ARM Institute and its projects
- Joint Base Cape Cod – an FAA joint test site with New York, one of six test sites for Unmanned Air Systems providing a secure environment for early-stage outdoor field and environmental testing, including large AUV platforms
- Consortium for Marine Robotics – based at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, advancing the way people and machines work together in the marine environment
